Page 18. Southwest Pass

In this drawing identify the following: Screwpiles. Ladder to keeper’s quarters. Keeper’s quarters. Central cylinder containing ladder to lantern. Watchroom balcony. Lantern. Lantern balcony. Ventilator ball.

Lighthouses were built by the federal government, after a recommendation to Congress by the head of the lighthouse service. Building couldn’t begin until Congress appropriated the money, which often took several years to happen.
