Refer to page 26 of Lighthouses Short and Tall for Stannard Rock Lighthouse

Here’s another lighthouse that took five years to build. Ice on the Great Lakes prevented shipping or construction during the winter.

Keeper Pederson would have been kept busy during this storm, chipping ice off the plate glass of the lantern and trying to keep a lamp burning while the waves were crashing against the lantern.

Note the solid granite base (probably filled with concrete and cisterns) on which the lighthouse stands. Also note the hoisting mechanisms for raising boats and supplies.
