Refer to page 31 of Lighthouses Short and Tall for New Canal Lighthouse

Wood towers and dwellings fared badly in marine environments. Only constant painting kept wood from rotting.

This light is on a lake. Why would the light be needed over only 270E of the horizon? How many degrees is the whole horizon? Think circles. Would any illumination be needed over the land behind the lighthouse?

Since this drawing was done, the New Canal Lighthouse has collapsed after being damaged by Hurricane Katrina. See current photos and restoration efforts by the Lake Pontchartrain Baisn Foundation website linked below.
