Refer to page 39 of Lighthouses Short & Tall for Point Arena Lighthouse

The 1906 earthquake struck before dawn on April 18th. At least one of the keepers would have been in the watchroom at the top of the Point Arena tower. Imagine his thoughts when the earthquake hit. In the book we incorrectly attribute a keeper's report as being taken from the lighthouse journal. The actual journal entry is at left.  How does it differ from the entry we included in the book?  Do you think the journal entry and the report we included was written by two different keepers?  Or perhaps the report was from an interview published by a newspaper?

According to this journal entry, what date did they discontinue lighting the light?  The keepers must have been capable of climbing the tower and the lens remained intact enough for them to light it.  Are you familiar with the term "aftershock"?  It appears from the journal entries that they had several.

Are you aware of the damage done in San Francisco by that earthquake and the fire that followed? Other California lighthouses were damaged as well. It’s a dramatic story if you want to learn more about it.

Can you locate Point Arena Lighthouse on this map?  (Although this is an 1881 map this tower replaced an earlier one in the same location.)
