Makapu’u Point Light is actually the shortest tower in this book. Why didn’t we put it on the cover instead of Duxbury Light? What order of lantern does it have? And how far above sea level is it? Makapu’u Point is a major coastal light rather than a small harbor light.

T.H., found in the second primary source, stands for Territory of Hawaii. When did Hawaii become a state of the United States?

The lighthouse tender had to dock in Honolulu because there was no landing place nearer to Makapu’u Point. Keepers kept track of the ships passing their lights. Do you suppose that the keeper at Makapu’u Point hitched up his team of horses and got into his wagon as soon as he saw the lighthouse tender and drove the 16 miles to Honolulu to get his supplies?

This Reader's Guide is intended to be used with Lighthouses Short and Talla book for readers 11 and up written by Mary Louise and Candace Clifford.  It is available from the publisher, Cypress Communications, by using their book order form.
