Readers Guide

Refer to page 9 of Lighthouses Short and Tall for Sabine Pass Lighthouse

Have you ever seen a lighthouse that looked like this one at Sabine Pass? The concrete buttresses used here on a land-based lighthouse were very unusual. Builders generally found it more effective to use pilings or caissons to support lighthouses in soft, sandy soil.

The Gulf Coast always faces the threat of hurricanes. Where on a light station would be the safest place to be during a hurricane? What would keepers do for fresh water after a storm had swept away most of their station?

Do you know what a ‘bayou’ is? Would you approve of channeling the family’s waste water into the bayou?
